Educators, along with the faculty and staff that support school operations, are some of the hardest working people.  Many of us give countless hours and money to ensure that we provide students and families with the love, care, and education they need.  We have amazing educational leaders who bring an anti-racism, socially just framework to their practice.  And we are seeing the fruits of that labor!  With this in mind, it is extremely disheartening to give our all while knowing that colleagues, unfortunately, are operating around us who hold bias and bigotry in their hearts and in their actions.

We often know who those people are, and based on their actions, we have to hold them accountable with consequences.  It is a gift and a privilege to play such a vital role as an educator in young people’s lives, and when someone unapologetically shows up as racist, biased, or bigoted, they need to be fired.  Being an educator isn’t for everyone, and there are other places that are better suited for these individuals’ gifts and talents.

we are is starting the #SomePeopleNeedToBeFired campaign to hold our education profession to a higher standard by removing those who should not be in schools. Our goal is to bring awareness to the need to remove this type of racial abuse from educational spaces.

Last April, we are hosted a panel on racial discipline disparities in K-12 education. We brought together an esteemed group of panelists to discuss how educators can better serve, protect, and advocate for Black and Brown students. One key take away emerged from this panel: there are adults who are perpetuating egregious racial harm against our children, and there’s simply no room for them in our schools.  For example see, Teacher goes on racist rant, not realizing Zoom was on, mother of Black child saysTwo of our guests, Tyler Whittenberg and Andrea Riles, made it plain that night when they said, “Some people just need to be fired.”

With our comrades at the Youth Justice Project and several community organizations throughout the country, we are excited to launch a #SomePeopleNeedToBeFired digital campaign. We invite students, parents & caregivers, educators, and community members to join us through social media to highlight this important issue.
