Ella Baker Day

The we are office is closed today to honor the birth of esteemed activist and Civil Rights leader, Ella Baker (December 13th). Mrs. Baker was born in Norfolk, Virginia and recalled that her first days fighting racism began there as a child, before her family moved to Littleton, North Carolina. She went on to graduate from Shaw University at the top of her class and devoted the rest of her life to the Black freedom struggle. Mrs. Baker advocated for Participatory Democracy through her work with the NAACP, SCLC, and perhaps most notably, SNCC.

We invite you to join us today as we remember her legacy and honor her lesson to find a way to “make the struggle for freedom, every day of the year, every year” until we win.

While the illustrious Sweet, Honey, and the Rock sing “we who believe in freedom cannot rest,” in Ella’s Song, we know that rest is essential to our renewal and longevity in the fight for liberation.
